Background
Carrie just spent the last two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a small town in western Honduras. Unfortunately, her time in Honduras came to an early end when, due to increasing violence, the US government decided to close down operations in the country and pull out its volunteers. Both her and Mary have very clearly seen the need for aid to Honduras in general and to the western region in particular and they want to continue to do something to benefit the country even though Carrie is no longer able to continue her work there. Carrie has always wanted to bike across the country and since she will be returning to school in the fall, now seems like the perfect time. Through their interactions with CAMO both Carrie and Mary are confident that it is the perfect partner organization.
Why CAMO?
Medical care is free in Honduras, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. The federal government provides Honduran hospitals with very limited funds and often there are not enough doctors, nurses, beds, or supplies to meet the needs of the community members. Santa Rosa de Copan is a medium sized city in western Honduras. The hospital in Santa Rosa serves hundreds of thousands of rural Hondurans on a shoe-string budget. CAMO has basically adopted this hospital and, through its headquarters in Ohio, sends medical supplies and doctors to augment and strengthen the minimal resources the Honduran government provides. Carrie and Mary have seen firsthand the enormous difference the CAMO funds, supplies, and doctors have made in Carrie's community and in all of western Honduras and they are proud to raise funds to support the organization with their ride.
